Based at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), courses are taught by researchers from the three partner institutions (the University of Oslo, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and PRIO). Prominent academics from other institutions in Norway and abroad also lecture in Research School courses. Research at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research Research themes. Peace researchers research war, peace, and conflict and the relationships between them and peace educators teach both the findings and methods of peace research as well as examine the values and beliefs that underlie various systems of war, peace, and conflict and raise questions for peace researchers. Peter Wallensteen, a leading scholar of peace and conflict, has suggested that ‘ Peace research is concerned with the question of violence.’ At first glance, this statement may seem odd — even paradoxical — since one might imagine that peace research is the antithesis of war studies. Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research (PEACE) provides a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to peace and conflict research. Ranked as a Top 10 degree in conflict resolution and peacebuilding by the Peacekeeper in 2017, PEACE facilitates understanding the complex nature of wars and conflicts as well as their short- and long-term consequences. Peace and conflict research is a field particularly useful for showing how some researchers have tried to balance their commitments to avoiding harm with doing good at the same time. As I consider books for a new qualitative research course in my undergraduate Justice and Peace Studies program, this volume is at the top of my list. PRIO’s purpose is to conduct research for a more peaceful world. In pursuit of this, we cultivate academic excellence, communicate with communities of scholars, policy-makers, practitioners, as well as the general public, and we engage in shaping the global peace research agenda. The Research School on Peace and Conflict is a cooperation between the University of Oslo, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Peace Research Institute Oslo.

Targeted at those seeking to create a positive impact on society, this master’s degree programme aims to prepare its students for professional activity in both interpersonal and international conflict situations. Developed with the challenges of modern-day society in mind, The Research School on Peace and Conflict is an academic consortium that provides courses and skills training for doctoral students. A forum for discussion of the most advanced issues in peace and conflict research, the Research School is based in downtown Oslo at the headquarters of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). Peace and Conflict Studies Research group The research group focuses on two sets of issues – how long-term and sustainable peace can be established and how effective crisis management can be organized. In peace and conflict research the study of peace agreement implementation has often focussed on the duration of peace. This however risks overlooking the implementation of the peace agreement as a whole.
